Hail the Blessed Finality of a Burnt Bridge!
As it will inevitably happen, when you put your hands to the plough to embark on any worth-while undertaking, dissonance and its relatives are bound to come looking for you. Well, they paid me a discourteous call today... and... in a moment of pure, unadulterated foolishness, I entertained them. Big mistake!
In hindsight, I see the wisdom in Elisha’s act of burning his yoke and oxen to follow Elijah. Elisha gave up an obscure career to pursue a Call of eternal value.
I joined internship with a measure of the persuasion and expectancy that Moses must have had as he faced Pharaoh, knowing full well that if he’d misheard the Call or if the Lord did not come through he would be eternally sank. This conviction must have kept Moses afloat when the wandering Jews longingly and stubbornly desired the leeks and garlic of Egypt.
No backward glances! Lord, help me keep my eyes on You – to spread your matchless love to a world in dire need. With this in mind, how can you, oh my soul, remain downcast?
